Cara Roberts is a British contemporary portrait artist working primarily with hyperrealistic watercolour painting, exploring identity, emotion, and social perception through the human face.

Based in London, Cara's practice is deeply informed by her lived experience of visible difference and her interest in challenging conventional beauty standards. After completing a Foundation in Fine Art at Central Saint Martins and a BA in Graphic Communication Design, her work developed a refined, detail-driven approach that merges technical precision with emotional depth. Her portraits examine the face not only as likeness, but as a vessel for narrative, individuality, and quiet power, inviting viewers to look closer and reconsider their assumptions around beauty, difference, and worth.

Collected and exhibited nationally and internationally, Cara's work has been showcased across London and beyond, including the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and large - scale public displays such as Canada Water Underground Station. Her practice balances delicacy and intensity, using the fluidity of watercolour to mirror both the fragility and resilience of human identity.

Alongside her independent studio practice, Roberts works within the technology and artificial intelligence space at a global marketing agency. She continues to develop new ways of presenting her work, with ambitions to exhibit internationally while maintaining a strong presence in London.

My approach

I am artistically inspired by unique faces that are plagued by injustice, poverty, illness and war. I respond through numerous media, both traditional and digital. My aim is to amplify the voices of my subjects and to wipe out stereotyping. Over the past two years, my day job as a digital designer has kept me updated with latest digital techniques which I have then been applying to my artwork. This has allowed me to constantly refine my work and keep it fresh.
